Hiking Route: Huelga Utrera to Cueva del Agua and Poyotello

Hiking Route: Huelga Utrera to Cueva del Agua and Poyotello

This is a particularly beautiful route that also has the benefit of being in good condition and well-signposted. If you are starting at the bottom and ascending, the route begins by turning off the JF-7038 on to the asphalted road leading to Huelga Utrera, which is just 900 metres further on. The route description below takes this location as the starting point. If you are starting at the top and descending, the route starts in Poyotello: at the entrance to the hamlet on the left-hand side there is a threshing floor, which marks the spot where the trail begins.

Campo del Espino to Banderillas Hiking Route

This route begins right in the heart of Campos de Henán Perea, a high intermontane plateau that is located at an altitude of between 1600 and 1700 metres. It is almost entirely treeless, extremely rocky and boasts a great number of funnel-shaped formations – such as sinkholes and potholes – that attest to both the harsh conditions of this area during winter and the nature of its composition. It is, in fact, the largest “sponge” to be found anywhere in the park: the limestone absorbs the water and, over countless years, is dissolved to create this remarkable landscape that many have compared to the surface of the moon. However, despite the fact that at certain times of the year this area may appear to be as dry as a desert, the largest underwater aquifer to be found anywhere in the park is located just beneath the surface.

This natural balcony, formed by crenellations of rock and located at an altitude of some 1700 metres, provides a spectacular panorama over the surrounding landscape. Before you are the Las Villas mountains to the west, the Cazorla mountains to the south and the Segura range to the east. The highest peaks in each range are clearly visible. If you approach the edge with caution and lean out you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of Barranco del Lobo ravine, and the “ghost village” of Los Centenares next to it. You can still make out the threshing floor on which the villagers used to winnow their grain.
