In this recreational area, there is a pool of water forming a part of the course of the Guadalquivir river. It is a perfect place to take a refreshing swim in the summer, and a wonderful spot in which to spend a pleasant day at any time of year. The area has stone tables, wooden seats and a kiosk-bar. The landscape is very lush and surrounded by pine woods covering the sheer rock slopes surrounding the area. The cool waters provide a home for the king of the Nature Park’s rivers: the bold common trout, which is joined by autochthonous barbel, minnows and even otters.

Cueva del Peinero Recreational Area

Cueva del Peinero Recreational Area

This Area is set in the midst of an imposing geological formation that resembles a majestic cirque in one of the steepest and most rugged spots in the Nature Reserve. Its natural outlet is a spectacular gorge with the crystal clear waters of the Aguascebas Grande river running through it. The river descends in a succession of waterfalls between large rocks half hidden by the tumultuous water and spraying foam. When it comes to the Recreational Area, however, the river flows silently and sleepily between the dense vegetation of willows, poplars, alder buckthorns and box.

Iznatoraf

Iznatoraf

The silhouette of this small town stands out aloft the hilltop on which the town is perched, 1000 m above sea level. This privileged location forms a vantage point between the large depressions formed by the rivers Guadalquivir and Guadalimar. Enjoy strolling through the maze-like streets of this medieval town with a Moorish-sounding name, decorated with flowerpots in the form of beautiful hanging gardens with geraniums, carnations, basil and jasmine. However, the town’s most captivating feature is afforded by the magnificent views of the olive groves and mountains in the nature reserve, which you can enjoy from several points equipped with information panels on the scenery.

El Tapadero Viewing Point

El Tapadero Viewing Point

This viewing point is situated on an outcrop of a rock wall, which has sheer sides that rise up dizzyingly from a chasm some 200 metres below. In places the jagged rock face is also home to clumps of Mediterranean plants, which affix their roots into the rock itself, while you will often see Spanish ibex traversing the steep slopes and will also be able to enjoy the majestic spectacle of large birds of prey in flight; for the most part griffon vultures, but also golden eagles, short-toed eagles, booted eagles, falcons, Eurasian sparrowhawks and even, if you are lucky, the recently reintroduced bearded vulture.

Santo Tomé

Santo Tomé

The origin of the current town of Santo Tomé was the former castle’s keep, all that remains of the 14th century fortification that the archbishop of Toledo, who governed these lands, had built to defend them. The tower was converted into the belfry of the parish church of Santo Tomás Apóstol. The history of Santo Tomé goes much further back in time, however.

Villacarrillo

Villacarrillo

The most attractive monument in this great olive-growing town is the church of La Asunción, designed by architect Andrés de Vandelvira, built in the 16th and 17th century, and listed as a National Monument in 1931. The building stands on the ruins of an old Moorish lookout tower and is surprisingly spacious, with beautiful, unique vaults. Inside, the parish Museum of La Asunción houses works from several local churches, and others donated by the brotherhoods and the parishioners, including 17th-19th century gold and silver works, prayer books, bibles and chasubles.
