El Puntal de la Rayuela Forest Trail

This track, which is generally in good condition, leads up to El Puntal, a promontory that stands over 1500 metres high and overlooks the town of Siles. It is home to a lookout hut (used to watch for forest fires) and a launch site for hang-gliders that boasts superb panoramic views. The route also offers opportunities to visit two miradores, or viewing points, and embark on walks to some of the most exquisite beauty spots in the northern part of the park during which you will progress through pine forests populated by Aleppo, Corsican and European black pines.

A little less than 2 kilometres from the starting point you will reach Portichuelo, where you will find the first viewing point and arrows pointing the way to two signposted paths. Further on, at kilometre 5.8, you will see the sign for the La Rayuela viewing point, which offers extraordinary views out over the landscape and is just 5 minutes’ walk from the trail.

Continuing along the main trail, at kilometre 10 you will come across a sign indicating a path towards the left, which leads to El Puntal. The path, which is usually in worse condition than the main trail, is signposted and reaches El Puntal after 3 kilometres.

We recommend…

  • Taking a walk along the track that leads off on the right-hand side a few metres before the path for La Rayuela viewing point. It is a wide track with panoramic views (there is no chance of you getting lost), and ends some 6.5 kilometres further on at the Siles Holiday Residence.
  • Walking the 3 kilometres to La Laguna de Siles, one of the few lakes to be found in the park. Although the lake may have dried up, the surrounding landscape is beautiful, consisting of a wide plain surrounded by dense oak forest. It is near the Calar de Mundo mountain range. The track that will take you to the lake leads off from the main trail on the left-hand side, where the trail curves towards the right at kilometre 8.2. Although the track is not signposted, it leads straight to the lake.
  • Instead of going up to El Puntal, park your car at the crossroads you will come across at kilometre 10.8 (where you will see the sign for La Rayuela viewing point, which offers extraordinary views out over the park) and continue walking along the main trail, which from this point onwards is in worse condition. During the first few kilometres of your walk you will have the pleasant surprise of entering a splendid oak forest, plentifully dotted with maples and gall oaks. Further on, the forest opens out to reveal vast, panoramic views all the way to the Pozo Romero beauty spot in the shadow of the Calar del Mundo mountain range.

The start of the trail is signposted “El Puntal Hang-Gliding Site” in the upper part of Siles, next to the retirement home.
