Cañada del Saucar to Puntal de la Misa Hiking Route

This is one of the most impressive walking routes in the Segura mountains. As you progress upwards, vegetation becomes scarcer, finally being reduced to a sparse copse of laburnum. However, when you reach the top of the limestone crag you will find yourself in the magnificent and inspiring surroundings of the Segura highlands: an enormous limestone shelf, 5 kilometres long, with pastures grazed by flocks of Segura sheep and pockmarked with sinkholes (called sorbeores by locals), hidden watercourses and rocky escarpments.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION

This is one of the most impressive walking routes in the Segura mountains. As you progress upwards, vegetation becomes scarcer, finally being reduced to a sparse copse of laburnum. However, when you reach the top of the limestone crag you will find yourself in the magnificent and inspiring surroundings of the Segura highlands: an enormous limestone shelf, 5 kilometres long, with pastures grazed by flocks of Segura sheep and pockmarked with sinkholes (called sorbeores by locals), hidden watercourses and rocky escarpments.

Near the crag you can see the remains of stone walls, which were once terraces used for growing crops and are a testament to the severity of life here many years ago: mountain residents had to climb all the way up here in order to sow their seeds and take advantage of the damp soil to be found in a small number of watercourses. Undertaking such a difficult journey on a daily basis, for such scant reward, would be unthinkable today.

The forest warden's hut at Puntal de la Misa and the east face of the limestone crag offer an endless succession of unforgettable views, set against a backdrop of endless mountains on the other side of the deep valley carved out by the river Segura. Peregrine falcons can be observed in the gorges, while wild boar are very common throughout the area. It is also easy to spot red-billed choughs and alpine accentors.
