Aguascebas Circular Hiking Route

Arriving from Mogón via the JH-7155 provincial road, just before crossing the Aguascebas dam and close to the town next to the reservoir, you will find a well-maintained forest trail on the right-hand side: this marks the beginning of the route. An information board describes the spot known as Tranco del Acebo, where the Cascada de Chorrogil waterfall is located and to which this route will take you.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION

Arriving from Mogón via the JH-7155 provincial road, just before crossing the Aguascebas dam and close to the town next to the reservoir, you will find a well-maintained forest trail on the right-hand side: this marks the beginning of the route. An information board describes the spot known as Tranco del Acebo, where the Cascada de Chorrogil waterfall is located and to which this route will take you. For the first 1.3 kilometres you will be continuously ascending through pine woods and large expanses of pasture, passing a number of restored farmhouses along the way. Once you have passed a hill with large clearings on the left, the track descends and approaches the Cascada de Chorrogil. As you are descending you will hear and see the waterfall, and after 1.78 kilometres there is a small path on the right-hand side: walk along this path and in 5 minutes you will reach the waterfall. Return back to the main track to continue the hike. The Cascada de Chorrogil is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the park: it is almost 100 metres high and has created a microclimate that is very characteristic of more northerly regions; the surrounding area has been named Tranco de Acebo (acebo meaning "holly", a plant typically found in northern climes) in recognition of this.

Continue your journey back uphill until you pass another hill 2.5 kilometres from the start of the route, at which point you will start heading downhill again towards the meadow of Aguascebas de la Fuente del Tejo. You will cross the River Aguascebas, which flows alongside a magnificent stretch of riparian woodland and open pasture, 3.3 kilometres on from the start via either a ford - after which the forest trail continues - or a crossing formed by white-painted concrete blocks, known as Pasá del Manguillo. The track starts to climb again until kilometre 4.15, where there is a crossroads near the farmhouse to your right. Turn left here and the rest of the route is almost entirely downhill.

At kilometre 5.1 you will come to another crossroads towards the left. Continue straight on (the trail will zig-zag a number of times before straightening out). In little more than ten minutes you will reach the asphalted JH-7155 provincial road, which you must turn left and follow until it takes you to the beautiful Aguascebas reservoir. The reservoir dam, which you will have to cross, is situated above the spectacular Aguascebas Chico ravine. The town where the route started is just a few metres from the reservoir.

The topography of the Las Villas mountain range is truly spectacular, with a number of deep gorges and ravines through which run its rivers and streams. A variety of plant species can be observed in this area, including juniper, boxwood, pines, holly trees, willows and poplars, while game animals such as wild boar and Spanish ibex are often found here.
