ROUTE DESCRIPTION

This route begins right next to the A-319, between Cañada Morales and the Tranco dam, close to Los Parrales recreation area and less than 200 metres from the Montillana campsite and the Los Parrales rural accommodation complex.

The trail consists of a forest trail that is normally closed to vehicles and which winds its way up the slopes in a serpentine fashion to the peak of Risca del Guijarrón peak, the final destination. Certain stretches of the route are extremely picturesque, with spectacular views of the Tranco reservoir (of the Cola de Hornos at first, and later of the central section).

At kilometre 2.2 you will find a spring and watering trough, where you can refill your water bottles ready for the remainder of the hike. while at kilometre 6.6 the trail meets with the GR 144, the Transhumance Route: if you take this route you can go back to Cañada Morales and then return to the starting point for the Montillana to Risca del Guijarrón route via the PR-A 193, thus completing a circular route some 27 kilometres long.

The final destination on the Guijarrón route is the forest-fire lookout hut, which is perched on a crag that offers breathtaking views over the Tranco reservoir and extensive panoramas of the rest of the park.

The lower sections of the trail pass through forests of Aleppo pine, which later give way to European black pine at higher altitudes. The pine forests are also home to plants that are highly characteristic of Mediterranean undergrowth.
