DESCRIPTION OF THE ITINERARY

The route starts at the crossroads in the village of Río Madera, at the intersection of the JF-7038 with the JF-7039. First, ride towards the village on an asphalted road, past the mountain guesthouse and small village chapel on the right and a few meters further along, on the left, the old wash-house and the Rocanales farmhouse.

At km 1.7 you turn off the asphalted road onto a forest track on the left that goes gently downhill between Coriscan pines to the river. From there, it goes upstream following Arroyo de los Asperones, past the Cortijos del Jaral farmhouses on the right, and on to the top of the Collado de los Asperones hill, where there is a small Segura sheep farm.

From there, you go down a steep track running parallel to the Arroyo Romaguillo stream until you come to Cortijos del Romaguillo and onto an asphalted road again. From there, you turn right to continue downstream through the River Madera valley, passing farms on either side that retain signs of the traditional mountain life, when self-sufficient farmers cleared small plots of land close to their homes to grow produce for their families. Continue down the road to kilometre 3.7 until you come to the small village of Venta de Rampias. Immediately after crossing a bridge in the village, you will see a narrow asphalted track on the left that is signposted Los Anchos.

The Los Anchos track rises gently and continuously, first along the right side of the valley past Hoya del Azor and other farms on the left and then, after crossing over to the left side, you come to Cortijos de Majada Oscura, which is on your left. Here there is an ethnographic museum that is worth a leisurely visit.

Coriscan pine forests scattered with a few deciduous trees, poplars and fruit trees dot the landscape next to rock faces that are mainly on the right side of the valley. Carry on up the valley until you arrive at the two most important towns in the area, Anchos and Pradomaguillo. It is worth taking a short break to stroll through their narrow streets.

At the entrance to Pradomaguillo, turn left and follow the GR 147 signposts. However, it is worth parking your bicycle and walking another 150 m past Pradomaguillo to enjoy the view of the Los Anchos valley in all its splendour.
Barely 400 m further on, on the GR 147, you arrive at a low, treeless hill on the left. Pedal up to the top of the hill for sweeping views of the valley and rocky limestone faces of the Calar that rises up before you. Then continue along this dirt track to climb the remaining 300-400 m to the top of Collado de Pradopuerco hill. Once at the peak, simply follow the main track that gently weaves its way downhill. Notice the slender Coriscan pines interspersed with clusters of holly trees and the extensive grazing lands under the trees. On the right you see a stream, known as Arroyo de las Tres Aguas, and a vertical limestone face called Calar de Peñarrubia. When you are opposite the Calar, you see the ruins of an old flour mill in a clearing down by the stream. Little more than 200-300 m further on, leave the GR 147 on the right and continue along the track you came along that appears in front of you. This track quickly descends and crosses the Tres Aguas stream that flows into Río Madera a few metres further on. After crossing the stream, you will come to a steep slope, a hill and the descent fording the Río Madera.

Crossing the Río Madera, you come to the very cool, shady spot where the Controlled Campsite of La Morringa and the recreational area are located. It is worthwhile to make a 100 m detour by turning to the right to contemplate the pools of water in the river and the area's facilities.

When you return to the asphalted road, bear right to carry on up the Río Madera valley. 1.2 km further on, you will arrive at your starting point..
